What should I expect at an Administrative Law Judge hearing?

When an individual in New Jersey satisfies the requirements to obtain Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, but had their initial application and appeal for reconsideration denied, he or she may feel anxious about the next step in the appeals process. Going before an administrative law judge is an opportunity for an objective party to issue a ruling on an individual's case, but it can also feel intimidating.

Social Security Disability Insurance is structured so that individuals in New Jersey that live with a condition, illness or injury that prevents the individual from working for an extended period time can collect benefits to continue providing for themselves when they are unable to work and earn an income. The benefits are calculated upon the amount an individual looking to collect benefits paid through taxes into the system during the period in which they were able to work.

In the fall, we posted about the insidious disease Alzheimer's and the manner in which it impacts victims and their families in New Jersey. We talked about the frightening reality Alzheimer's victims live in as prisoners in their body and mind. At that time, we discussed how of the 5.4 million individuals living with Alzheimer's, there are about 200,000 victims that begin developing symptoms prior to 65 years old. This is known as early-onset Alzheimer's, and is included on the compassionate allowance list for faster receipt of Social Security Disability benefits.
