SSI benefits for children under scrutiny

Newark families who receive Supplemental Security Income benefits for their disabled children know how important those payments can be. However, claims of fraud have the Social Security Administration looking more closely at the SSI program.

Appeals are common part of application process

People in Newark and others around the country first applying for Social Security Disability Insurance are often initially denied. However, applicants have the option to appeal those decisions and are often successful, particularly if they seek help from an attorney or other representative. Because approximately two-thirds of initial SSDI applications are denied, applicants should plan ahead and be prepared for an appeal.

A surge in applications for disability benefits challenges the system

Four times as many Americans, including many living in New Jersey, survive on Social Security disability benefits than forty years ago. Deemed "out of control" by some, the increasing numbers of Americans applying for Social Security disability benefits has made it difficult for even the most deserving applicants to receive benefits.
