When Social Security disability isn't enough, community helps out

Many of those living on Social Security Disability benefits, and this includes many New Jersey residents, are still struggling to make ends meet. If it were not for the help of the community, many families living on SSDI benefits would themselves in even worse situations.

One family illustrates just how difficult it is to live in this economy. A 40-year-old mother lives off her Social Security disability payments. Her husband has been unemployed, but no longer draws an unemployment check. The mother was worried how she would feed her family and buy presents for her kids at Christmas.

For this family and many others, a local church provided them with turkey dinners and presents. The first 150 people in attendance received dinners. Previously, the church gave out more than 10,000 pounds of food, along with backpacks, clothing and school supplies.

Over the last six years, the woman in this case has undergone eight back surgeries, but says, "If it wasn't for the community, I wouldn't know what my family would be doing for Christmas dinner. It's so difficult right now. You just have to put your pride aside to provide for your children."

Social Security disability benefits are certainly useful for those who need them. Many of these people would be in very difficult circumstances without those benefits. When New Jersey residents need assistance in getting SSDI benefits, working with a legal professional may be a good first step as the process of applying for benefits can be cumbersome and confusing for many individuals.
