Social Security may be able to help the homeless in New Jersey

Homelessness is a chronic problem in New Jersey and throughout the United States. There are an estimated 500,000 people said to be homeless in the country, and of those, about 50,000 live on the streets. Often, these individuals do not have any idea where to turn to for a helping hand, but there are a number of governmental programs that can help.

Those who are homeless may be able to receive Supplemental Security Income, as well as disability, retirement and survivors benefits. The best place to start looking for these types of benefits is online at the Social Security Administration website.

On the website, there is a section devoted to these issues entitled, Spotlight on Homelessness. It provides a Benefit Eligibility Screening Tool that anyone can use to determine the programs that might be available to them, given the specific circumstances. The Spotlight on Homelessness page also includes information on healthcare, advocacy and outreach groups, and links to other websites that may be helpful. Those in New Jersey who are concerned about someone they know may also find it beneficial to visit the website for ways they can help.

Those in New Jersey who are struggling with homelessness or who find themselves unable to work because of an injury may benefit from consulting with an attorney who is experienced in Social Security disability benefits and qualifications. The lawyer can assist in determining what assistance fits the specific circumstances and also assist in applying and obtaining all available benefits in an expeditious manner.
